When the icy winds howl and the snow piles high, the motivation to move can easily be buried in the spring. However, staying physically active is important to our health and mental well-being throughout the year. Don't let Old Man Winter freeze your workout routine! Here are my top tips for keeping your workouts cool yet cozy even on cold days.
First, spice up your home sessions by mixing up your activities. To increase flexibility, alternate between aerobic activities such as dancing, skipping and stair running, invigorating movements like squats, lunges and planks, and stretches. Avoid boredom by changing the focus of your training daily or weekly.
Stream online workout videos and experience new classes in dance, kickboxing, strength training, yoga and more without leaving your living room. Online sites like Daily Burn, Nike Training Club, and YouTube offer tons of free video workouts.
Invest in inexpensive home gym equipment like resistance bands, adjustable dumbbells, or a basic exercise bench to open up more strength training options. Or use common household items like canned goods for makeshift weights. Get creative!
Lighten your daily steps by walking and jogging in place while watching shows, repeatedly walking upstairs to do laundry, or circling your house while on the phone. Every step counts!
When cabin fever hits, layer up and head out for some fresh air with activities like brisk walking, snowshoeing or having a snowball fight with the neighbors. It’s invigorating! Just watch out for slippery ice patches.
Recruit family, roommates, or friends on social media for motivation and accountability. Set weekly step challenges, share workout selfies and cheer each other on virtually. A little healthy competition keeps things interesting.
