The holidays have come and gone, and while we had happy memories, many of us are feeling the effects of overindulgence. Joyful meals, sweet treats and festive cocktails have probably created an appetite for lighter, more nutritious dishes. Fear not, I've put together a simple yet satisfying post-holiday detox plan to get you revved up.
First, let's reset our mindset. Restrictive diets rarely work long term. It's about self-care through better nutrition, not punishment. Fill up on healthy, energizing foods to keep you feeling super satisfied without overdoing your vacation.
The target is mainly plants. Emphasize fruits, vegetables, beans/legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Their fiber keeps you full longer while providing vitamins, minerals and disease-fighting phytonutrients. Go easy on the meat - plant-based protein is not only better for you, but also gentler on your digestion.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Eliminate bloating and toxins by drinking water and unsweetened tea. Add lemon for extra antioxidant vitamin C. Broths are also wonderfully soothing and full of vitamins and minerals.
Focus your plate on the rainbow. The wider the range of natural colors, the wider the range of useful nutrients. Sweet potatoes, berries, tomatoes, carrots, greens... let the colors guide your choice.
Limit processed foods. Skip refined grains, sweets, salty snacks and sugary drinks. Artificial additives and preservatives can irritate your digestive system. Keep it simple for a few days while your body heals.
Let your good gut bacteria thrive again with fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi. A happy gut reduces bloating and sugar cravings. Try to have some at every meal.
While what you eat after the holidays is important, don't forget exercise, sleep and stress management. Each supports your overall well-being. Do what nourishes your mind, body and spirit.
Here's to a lighter and brighter new year! What are your plans for a healthy lifestyle after the holidays? Did I miss any "detox" foods? Share below!
